After the monthly feature of top trending Speakers, SpeakIn presents the Top 10 Trending Speakers for the year 2019. 1. NARENDRA MODI
The 14th and current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Damodardas Modi remained in the news for the entirety of 2019. An eloquent and confident speaker, PM Modi addressed a gathering of over 50,000 and several American politicians including President Donald Trump, making it the largest gathering for an invited foreign leader visiting the United States. On abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and reorganisation of the state, PM Modi has said “You are aware that India has decided to eliminate a big reason behind sowing of seeds of terrorism and separatism”.
2. Dr. SUBRAMANIAN SWAMY
Ace economist and Rajya Sabha MP, Dr Subramanian Swamy is one of the most trending speakers of the year. His stance on popular subjects ranging from 2019 Ayodhya verdict to Citizen Amendment Act were acknowledged by the masses. He voiced his opinion questioning the nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).He was quoted saying “After the passage of the CAA, the country is now convinced in large numbers that the law is anti-secular and that it is targeted against Muslims. It is nothing of the kind. It is the most humane legislation you could bring in current circumstances,”.
3. SADHGURU JAGGI VASUDEV
World-renowned Yogi, mystic and spiritual leader, Sadhguru trended throughout the year for his astounding clarity and profound insights on a range of topics. He has spoken extensively on ecological issues and offered the world game-changing solutions that could marry the seemingly conflicting needs of Economy and Ecology. His address at the UN COP14 on his plans to revitalise River Cauvery was hailed by world leaders and policymakers. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Davos 2020, Sadhguru addressed the media and delegates as a part of the world-wide Trillion Trees campaign. Sadhguru has used the power of communication to bring about tremendous transformation in the world.
4. ABHIJIT BANERJEE
Indian- American Economist Abhijit Banerjee kept in the news for winning the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences along with wife Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. A professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr Banerjee is extremely vocal about the various problems poor are facing in India. He comments, “Most of the poor are poor because of a bunch of policy choices we made with land, labour, credit and every market in India we have it distorted to make large transfers to the rich. And we give a small amount of money to the poor and we call it a sop”.
5. ARNAB GOSWAMI
Indian journalist and television news anchor Arnab Goswami remained one of the most popular voices of the year. Managing Director, Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of Republic TV, Goswami is noted for raising tough questions and taking a stand against biased, fake and compromised media reportage. “A large section of the media has compromised. Not reporters, but editors. I am raising these questions because I have declared my independence from the fake media and compromised media. Am I dividing this country by asking questions about triple talaq?” he had said.
6. SOURAV GANGULY
Former Indian cricketer, commentator and administrator, Sourav Ganguly has been trending in 2019 for all the right reasons. The Padma Shri awardee has since been in the news for implementing several major reforms including introduction of day- night test cricket to India. The former Indian Captain talked about the issues he’ll try to solve as he compared the present day BCCI situation to emergency. “Because the organization belongs to the members and they had no say in the last three years. There were reforms. There were court cases, tussles going on and to be honest there was no connection” he said.
7. Dr. KRISHNAMURTHY SUBRAMANIAN
Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian is an Indian economist and the current Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India (CEA). He wrote in an article “After laying out this strategic blueprint for fulfilling the vision of Economy@5trillion, the Economic Survey 2018-19 describes some of the tactical devices required to navigate an uncertain world in constant disequilibrium. The Survey delineates the impact created by government’s flagship initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Mission, Jan Dhan Yojana and the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, which provide testimony to the potential for behavioural change in India.”
8. NANDAN NILEKANI
Indian entrepreneur and Infosys Co-Founder Nandan Nilekani has been the Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and laid the foundation for Unified Payment Interface, popularly known as UPI. The Padma Bhushan awardee and IIT Bombay alumnus Nandan is said to find solutions impacting 1.3 billion population at large. “I think that if we want to move the needle in India; if we really want to make an impact; if we want more development; if we want to actually change the lives of people, we have to think at scale because just having a small solution which works in a little pilot is not going to change anybody,” he added.
9. GRETA THUNBERG
Greta Thunberg is a Swedish climate activist who made headlines by starting a school strike for climate involving over 100,000 students. The young and ferocious speaker was invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos and UN Climate Conference where her speeches again made a worldwide impact. TIME magazine named her Person of the Year as well as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. “How dare you,” she said. “I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean, yet you all come to us young people for hope.”
10. SMRITI IRANI
Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani is one fierce and vocal Member of Parliament. Former Television actor and producer, Irani created history during General Elections in May 2019 when she won the constituency of Amethi, a seat always considered to be a stronghold for Congress. Irani, who has also been given the additional charge of Ministry of Women and Child Development, is known to be vocal for causes for women and standing up for these issues in Parliament. “We are committed to taking all appropriate steps to ensure women empowerment and development and welfare of children in the context of nation building,” she had said.
