The story began when she conceived the idea of becoming an adoptive mother at only nineteen. So she became an adoptive mother to a son after being a biological mother to her daughter to advocate child adoption as a way to secure the lives of abandoned and unfortunate children. She looks forward to propagating the cause of child adoption and inspire the society to contribute actively by choosing to become adoptive parents. Her children are now 17 (daughter) and 13 (son).
She volunteered for many orphanages and old age homes individually, until she co-founded a public charitable trust Charista Foundation in January 2021, registered at Hyderabad to give her social work a structure.
She feels that the cause of Elderly Care needs to be addressed globally. Shilpi forayed into film-making along with Anil Kumar, co-founder of Charista Foundation. Producing the social short ‘Poonam’, was a collaboration between Shilpi’s Voice & Visuals and Precipio Technologies Pvt. Ltd. The film has received 34 national and international awards so far. ‘Poonam’ is a tribute to the elderly, a film that showcases their loneliness and the need for companionship. The film’s purpose is to sensitise its audience and create awareness towards the psychological needs of the elderly. Charista Foundation aims to bring solace to the lonely and isolated elderly, and make them an active, living part of the society using their experience and intellect.
She took to becoming a professional Sound Healing Practitioner to further her journey in the domain of voice and sound. Only a mentor can spot the fire in one's spirit, harness it and make one shine her/his light on the world. That mentor for me is Shilpi. As an English Educator, I am expected to play with my voice in order to dynamically transact the chosen content. In a world where truth is a rare commodity, she held the mirror of reality up to each one of my speech deliveries. In the hustle-bustle of our lives, we tend to forget that each of us is blessed with our own unique style of speaking. Shilpi reminded me constantly and I must say relentlessly that each of us is blessed with the triumvirate weapons of our smile, our eyes, and our voice. She taught me to breathe life in a variety of script genres right from a monologue, a documentary, an advertisement, a children's story, an e-book, a speech, to a radio jingle just to name a few. With her help, I now know how to tell them apart and deliver all the scripts by understanding the nuances of voicing. In understanding my voice, I found that I had discovered a part of me that I had lost along the long and weary road of academic pursuits. For this, for your ever-so-consistent mentoring, and a lifetime of wishful thinking for all you know, a big thank you, Shilpi!
