He has served as Secretary-General of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry - FICCI until April of 2018. He was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's media advisor and chief spokesperson - PMO, from 2004 until 2008. Few can claim as much depth in understanding and experience as regards economics and policy vis-a-vis India.
Mr. Baru has served in many important positions: Director for Geoeconomics and Strategy, International Institute of Strategic Studies in London; Visiting Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Institute of South Asian Studies in Singapore; Professor of Departments of Economics at JNU; the first Jhamandas Watamull Fellow at the East-West Centre, Hawaii. As a consultant, he has also worked with the Human Development Report Office - UNDP and the Asian Development Bank.
Sanjaya is the only journalist to have been the Editor of all three pink newspapers - The Economic Times, Financial Express, and the Business Standard. Sanjaya is the author of the influential book The Political Economy of Indian Sugar. The Accidental Prime Minister, Baru’s tell-all memoir about his time at the PMO, was made into a successful Bollywood film.
