NISHAS SWIMMING CAREER
Nisha had a near drowning experience at the age of 5, and was petrified of the water till her father taught her to swim in. In less than a year she won her first national level bronze and there was no turning back. At the age of 12 she won 5 gold medals at the national senior championships meant for athletes aged 18 and above. That year she went on to win a bronze medal at the Asian age group beating some of the top chinese and Japanese swimmers.
At the time she was living and training in Chennai and the whole family decided to make the move to Bangalore to avail of higher quality coaching and access to 50 meter pools. She narrowly missed qualifying for the Atlanta Olympics at the age of 14. In 2000 she was awarded the International Olympic Committees (IOC) scholarship and trained in Australia for an 8 month period. She became the first Indian woman to achieve the Olympic qualifying time and went on to represent India in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
CURRENT INVOLVEMENTS AND PERSONAL LIFE
Post her retirement in 2004, she went on to found the Nisha Millets Swimming Academy, as she wanted to bring quality swim teaching to India at the grassroot level. She felt that for a country of 1 plus billion people, she would need to spread the love of swimming and get more youngsters in the sport and this would ultimately lead to the elusive olympic medal in swimming in the future. Nisha is also now involved with training open water athletes, 4 of whom have qualified for the world triathlon championships.
She is a mother of twins and an avid crossfitter. She is a brand advocate for Speedo in India and part of the Dhronacharya Award Selection Committee.
She has done motivational talks for a variety of corportates such as Accenture, IIM, Infosys, Target, Harman and GE Medical. She has also been a panelist for Times Now Olympic coverage and also a panelist for Bharkha Dutts "We the Woman"
